Just Drove Off a Dealer Lot? When Your Coverage Actually Starts

Signing paperwork at a dealership comes with a burst of excitement and a quiet question most buyers don’t ask out loud: is this car actually insured on the drive home? The answer depends on whether you already have a policy, what that policy says about newly purchased vehicles, and how quickly you let your agent know.

A Simple Timeline for New Car Owners

Before you sign

If you don’t currently carry auto insurance, there’s nothing to extend. You’ll need a policy in place before the car leaves the lot. Many dealers and lenders ask for proof of coverage at signing.

The drive home

If you already have a policy, many include a newly acquired vehicle provision that extends some coverage to a car you just bought for a limited time. The length of that window varies by carrier, and it can be shorter for physical damage coverage than for liability.

The next day or two

Call your agent with the VIN, purchase date, and lender information. Replacing an old car and adding a second one are handled differently, and reporting early removes the guesswork.

Within 30 days

Nebraska dealers typically issue an In Transit tag. Before it expires, register the vehicle with your county treasurer, bringing proof of insurance along with your title paperwork.

Details That Trip Buyers Up

  • A financed car usually needs collision and comprehensive, even if your old car didn’t carry them
  • Trading in a vehicle doesn’t automatically move its coverage to the new one
  • A second vehicle may not receive the same automatic protection as a replacement
